The time between Halloween and Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, despite all my good intentions for “getting it right,” always seems to be a blur for me. Too many things to do. Too many deadlines before the end of the year. Too many obligations of all sorts to family, friends, and work. Too much shopping!
December seems to be the month that taps me on the shoulder and says, “Hey, how about being here, right here, right now, and paying attention to each and every moment before it slips away? Just be.”
In the spirit of learning how to give myself more space, and allowing myself to just be, I would like to offer you some of the things I find helpful in keeping myself present in the moment.
I start my mornings quietly, drinking my coffee and looking out at the world from my window, reflecting with gratitude that I have a warm home with a pleasing view. And despite whatever noise may be coming in from outside, I welcome it with a smile, because it means I am alive. And this sets the tone for the day, because even though I would love for everything to go just as planned, plans sometimes take on a life of their own. If I can just be, I will make better decisions, and then feel clear and energized as opposed to overwrought and fatigued.
Breathing is another part of this ritual. I like to carry certain essential oils in my inhaler stick that I can pop into my bag and use throughout the day as a gentle reminder when I get off-track and do not give myself space to be.
My mantra: “I commit to being as present as possible throughout every moment of this day.”

Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) helps discourage overthinking and tensely perfectionistic behavior. It helps us let go of fixed expectations and calmly acknowledge our own limitations.
Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis) purges us of worry and unburdens us by giving us the determination to overcome life’s obstacles.
Lemon (Citrus limon) encourages greater trust and a sense of security.
Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) helps us take a more relaxed approach, encouraging adaptability. It is associated with Jupiter, the planet of optimism, and instills a more positive attitude and a philosophical view of difficulties.
Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) helps with the capacity to simply be. It restores, centers, and reconnects us, closing the gap between Spirit and matter.
Carry this aroma around with you as a reminder to stay present and grounded in the moment.
