Fall has arrived, and I am always aware of the way the light seems to change, getting a bit “thinner” and “cooler.” Thank goodness for the bright russets, oranges, and golds of the leaves, which provide contrast and warmth.
I am already beginning to nest and hunker down, thinking about crochet projects, books to read, teas to make, and of course, which essential oils make me happiest this time of year.
I’m ready to slow my pace down, pause, breathe that cool, crisp air a little more deeply, and ground myself a bit more, connecting to mother earth in all her wondrous permutations.
The essential oils that come to mind for me are Sweet Orange, Lavender, and Patchouli. I know, Patchouli, you say? Isn’t that some hippie fragrance? But Patchouli’s great interest for me is in its energetic and psychological value. Patchouli harmonizes the Earth element and the intellect, grounding and stabilizing the mind when overthinking and worry develop. This oil is great for those who, due to excessive mental activity and nervous strain, feel out of touch with their body and/or sensuality. Patchouli combines a calmative property with a gentle stimulating one, providing a synergistic effect that results in a feeling of uplift. For the individual who feels a sense of separation from their creative expression, Patchouli activates the imagination and reawakens the urge to create.
Sweet Orange essential oil helps us take a more relaxed approach, makes us more adaptable, and encourages us to handle things in stride. It instills optimism and encourages a more easygoing approach to life.
The Lavender plant’s astrological “ruler” is the sign Virgo. Being a Virgo myself, I turn to this oil often. Lavender is both a habit breaker and a crisis smoother. The oil instills feelings of calmness and composure. It maintains our overall mental-emotional equilibrium, and it encourages the full expression and optimization of self.
