Do you think that dreaming and career planning are two mutually exclusive activities? Have you ever caught yourself back-pedaling from your professional dream, just because it doesn’t feel possible? I encourage you to reconsider and utilize this one simple “hack” to enable you to achieve your dreams: Once you have dreamed, take immediate action and do something to begin to make it real.
The mistake that so many of us make? Stopping at the dreaming stage. We create an amazing possibility and then our rational mind takes over, and we convince ourselves that the dream is too big, that we need to take the safe path, and that pursuing dreams is for tomorrow, not today. Wrong! The trick here is to connect your dreaming to immediate action. Why is this so important? Taking action enables you to make your dream real. It creates momentum and progress and, well, more action! Start dreaming and doing today to get to where you want to be tomorrow!
- Dream Big. Today, dream as big as you can about where you want to be professionally. Write that dream down so as you progress, you can visit it often and remind yourself of your goals when life and work feel hard.
- Just Start. Take some small action to move yourself toward your dream. Learn a new skill by taking an online or continuing education lecture, tutorial, or class; meet others who can help you by joining a group; attend a networking event; reach out to friends or acquaintances who may be pursuing a similar path; even read biographies of real people who have lived their dreams. This first step in “doing” gets you one step closer to making your dream a reality.
- Create Accountability. Tell someone about your dreams and actions. Ask them to help you be accountable for making your dream real, and check in with them weekly or monthly. This action step can help keep you on track, because now you’re answering to someone besides yourself.
