Picture this: You’ve picked out the right outfit for the occasion, but it’s missing a certain something—you aren’t quite sure what. We’ve all been there. The question is, what is that something?
The answer is accessories—more specifically, jewelry.
We rarely go jewelry shopping with a specific outfit in mind, so picking the right jewelry for the occasion can make you question “what goes with what?” and “is this piece more appropriate than that one?” Our typical go-to jewelry—that bangle bracelet or simple chain necklace—is perfect when we’re on-the-go or accessorizing for work or lunch with friends. But if you want to make your look really special, then some forethought and decision-making is required. The good news is, even the most basic outfit can pop with the help of the right bling.
There isn’t necessarily a right or wrong way to accessorize an outfit with jewelry. The key is what’s right for the occasion. When do you go daring? When do you stay subtle? And when do you do nothing at all? Set yourself up for success when it comes to accessorizing with jewelry by knowing how to pick the perfect piece.
- Dare to be different. Bold jewelry can really make an outfit: color, texture, shine, and size all matter. The neckline and pattern of your outfit can help guide your decision. If your neckline is high or the pattern of the clothing is dramatic, try bold, oversized earrings or rings. Stick to matte (rather than shiny) jewelry. If the neckline is simple (a basic scoop neck or boat neck), or you are wearing a strapless dress or a single color, try a big necklace with a lot of shine—a statement necklace. If wearing a deep v-neck, you can add a necklace that takes the shape of the v to accentuate and bring attention to the cut. But keep in mind that adding a necklace to a v-neck draws attention to your body and clothes. The shinier the necklace, the more attention goes to that deep v.
- Less can be more. Statement pieces are great, but if your outfit is already making a huge statement, then let it do just that. Your jewelry should take the back burner on this one—let your clothes do the talking. If your outfit is filled with prints, embellishments, or textures, try simple studded earrings or a few simple rings. The cut of the neckline is a good guide here as well. If wearing a plunging neckline, you can keep the chest bare or choose a delicate and very subtle (no shine) necklace to keep the focus on the dramatic cut of the clothing. Jewelry that doesn’t take away from the outfit is the right choice in this fashion scenario.
- Just do nothing. If you’re going for a simple, understated look and feel your outfit needs absolutely nothing, then chances are you’re right. Jewelry isn’t a must. It’s an enhancement. You do not necessarily need jewelry to make an outfit. Trust your instincts.
