My love affair with patchouli essential oil goes back to my childhood. When I was growing up, there was a girl in my building who wore an enchanting fragrance. Although only slightly older than myself, she was a true “grown up” in my eyes, so it took me some time to build up the courage to ask her the name of the scent. When I finally asked, she revealed it was patchouli and promised to get me some of my own. I’ve been in love ever since.
Ah, patchouli. While so often maligned, and associated with hippies and all things from the sixties, this oil has been used for centuries as part of the traditional medicine systems in Japan, China, and Malaysia. This surprisingly powerful little plant, a member of the mint family (another surprise), also has amazing health and wellness properties. It is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and an effective natural bug repellent!
Love the health benefits of patchouli, but not sure about her warm, spicy, and deep aroma? This non-drying hand sanitizer recipe makes patchouli easy to love by combining it with several essential oils. Make this hand sanitizer and pop it in your purse to rock the new boho chic!

Patchouli has great energetic and psychological value. Excessive mental activity, worry, nervous strain, and feeling “out of touch” with the body and /or sensuality are all indicators of physical and emotional imbalance. When we get stuck in our heads, we can become out of touch with the earth or even our own physical existence. Patchouli’s characteristic earthy notes counter this imbalance, grounding the body, stabilizing the mind, and connecting us with nature. Patchouli also combines a calming property with a gentle stimulating one, a synergistic effect that results in a feeling of uplift for those feeling down and heavy. And for the individual who feels a sense of separation from creative expression, patchouli activates the imagination and reawakens the urge to “conceive.”
I recommend PET plastic with a flip top for travel or if you plan to keep the formula in your purse.
