As a regular at a teashop in my neighborhood, I’ve befriended the baristas who, to my delight, never tire of discussing the healing properties of teas. We talk about unusual ingredients in new herbal varieties and share how blending teas may offer the perfect solution for a cold, nausea, headache, etc. This week, one of the baristas surprised me when she asked, “As a healer, can you explain the benefits of hot water and lemon?” The question is one I enjoy answering—such an easy addition to your life has amazing health benefits—but her use of the term “healer” set me back. I don’t think of myself as a healer. In fact, even being called a healer made me cringe. But I am not a doctor either. Quickly it became clear that research was needed to help me understand the root of my cringing as well as the best way to define a person who helps others in their pursuit of health.
To me, the term “healer” implied the possession and use of a mystical or magical gift to bestow health with tactics beyond scientific explanation. There is nothing mystical or magical about my work. Whether recognized by Eastern or Western medicine, all of my techniques follow an easily explainable practice. In that evaluation I am definitely not a healer. It was not until I researched the word healer that I was set straight. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a healer as “one that heals.” And the word “heal” is defined as “to become healthy or well again” or “to make (someone or something) healthy or well again.” With this new understanding of the term, I realize, okay, yes, I am a healer. But the greatest revelation is, anyone can be a healer. With clear information on how to heal yourself, you can become healthy and well again.
