So those hot, lazy, hazy days of summer are enduring, and you might just be kicking back and relaxing in the shade with a homemade lemonade, or lounging on a beach soaking up some rays. No matter how you spend your days, summer is a great time to start getting those creative juices flowing in preparation of what the French call la rentree, which basically means “see you in September!”
These are the moments that allow us time to daydream, muse, and get inspired for all manner of creative projects. Lending to that inspiration is our aromatic sensibility, dialed up with blooming flowers and trees, salt air, freshly cut grass, and that special aroma after a thunderstorm—summer is simply an olfactory delight!
Here is one of the recipes I use to promote inspiration, when those dog days of summer roll in. This recipe is a “mother blend,” meaning you mix a larger number of drops together, but only use a few for each type of application. In a 30ml (1-ounce) amber glass bottle with a reducer, add the essential oils listed below.
Refreshing Summer Home Spray
5 drops Basil (Ocimum basilicum)
10 drops Clary sage (Salvia sclarea)
10 drops Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
15 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
5 drops Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
15 drops Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)
2 ounces distilled water
1. Add the essential oils to an amber glass bottle.
2. Gently roll the bottle between hands to blend the oils.
4. Use this spray to freshen any room in your house; you can even use it as a linen spray.
Buy high-quality essential oils from reputable sources. You can feel confident that you are buying quality oils from the following suppliers:
Shop for the best price at each site. Keep all of these addresses handy, because when an oil is out of stock on one site you can find it on another recommended site.
This “mother blend” is a unique combination of herb, leaf, and fruit oils; therefore, the qualities imparted are broad. Each type of oil has its own benefits, so I like to think of a mix like this as a lot of little bits of goodness that alchemize into greatness. Read on for the benefits from each type of oil:
Herb oils provide encouragement, caring, and generosity.
Leaf oils support creativity, imagination, and idealism.
Fruit oils provide inspiration, joyfulness, and enthusiasm.
Together, they form a union that can support guidance to elevate you to your next great insight!
Add 30 drops of the “mother blend” to 10ml (1/3 ounce) sea salt or fine pink Himalayan salt, and place in a 1-ounce glass jar with a lid. I save the little ones from jams for this purpose—they are fun to decorate with ribbon or twine, but you can buy them as well. Leave these jars on your desk, nightstand, or dresser, and you have your very own “smelling salts.” Just inhale and enjoy as needed.
Alternately, place 5-10 drops in an aromatherapy diffuser, let it run for 10-20 minutes in your office or a room where you work at home, and see it work its inspirational magic.
