Skin care—protection, prevention, and maintenance—starts with a firm grasp of skin type. With this knowledge, determining the right skin care routine is possible. The healthiest and most balanced skin is a result of creating a personalized routine based on choosing practices and products that work best for your skin type.
- Remove makeup.
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser designed for normal skin; rinse well, and pat dry with a soft towel.
- Wait 20 minutes.
During this time, your skin will return to its natural state, the characteristics of which determine your skin type. Do not moisturize, and avoid touching your face.
- Dab your face with a tissue.
Pay attention to the “T-zone” areas (across the forehead, down the nose, and on the chin).
- Normal Skin
Normal skin reveals no oil on the tissue, and there’s no visible flakiness when looking in the mirror. Normal skin has a healthy balance of water and oil. Supple and smooth, this is the most ideal of the types.
- Oily Skin
Oily skin reveals oil on the tissue. Oily skin is characterized by large pores and is more prone to blackheads and breakouts. Although oily skin has a tendency to look shiny, the upside is that it ages the best of all skin types.
- Dry skin
Dry skin reveals no oil on the tissue, but some flakiness may be visible when looking in the mirror. Dry skin exhibits a tendency to flake and develop red patches or fine lines.
- Combination Skin
Combination skin will reveal oil on the tissue only in the T-zone areas and is normal elsewhere. Combination skin, the most common skin type, displays elements of normal, oily, and dry skin.
Once you know your skin type, feel empowered that you understand a new part of your body and can now start experimenting to find the right routine and products for your own personalized skin care regimen.
- Repeat the skin type test 4 times a year. As the weather, your hormones, and your age change, so does your skin.
- Buy smart. Choose products based on your skin type. If your face is excessively red or irritated, or feels hot immediately after using a product, you may have sensitive skin. In this case, choose products that are labeled specifically for sensitive skin.
- Give ample time. Remember, any skin care routine takes 4–6 weeks to fully take effect; give your body ample time to adjust to change. However, if your skin has a negative reaction to a product, discontinue use immediately and return the product.
